DE: Im Oktober 2020 beendete ich die Arbeit an meinem letzten Album „Beyond the Neonlights“. Danach schaltete ich 5 Monate lang keinen meiner Synthesizer ein. Ja, ich brauchte zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben eine Auszeit von der Musikproduktion. Der Corona-Blues und die ausgefallenen Konzerte und Jobs taten ihr Übriges dazu. In dieser Zeit habe ich viel über das Leben nachgedacht. Auch habe ich intensiv meine eigene Musik der letzten Jahrzehnte gehört. Diese Erfahrung war neu und wertvoll. Aber eigene Musik machen war, wie gesagt, tabu. Zwischendurch plagten mich richtige Sorgen, dass ich irgendetwas in mir selbst unwiederbringlich verloren hätte. Das passiert vielen. Zum Glück kam es anders. Anfang April schaltete ich dann zum ersten Mal nach fast einem halben Jahr meine Synths mit dem Ziel ein, an neuen musikalischen Ideen zu arbeiten. Eine Idee folgte auf die nächste. Nach ein paar Tagen kam mir die Idee eine Art Essenz meines bisherigen musikalischen Schaffens als Konzept für das nächste Album zu verwenden. Dabei lege ich sehr großen Wert darauf, dass mein neues Album „Reminiscence“ kein Remix-Album ist. Jeder Song ist neu und das von Grund auf. Ich habe mich an eigenen Sounds und Ideen meiner eigenen musikalischen Vergangenheit mit Bedacht bedient. Fans und treue Hörer meiner Musik wird dies sicherlich auf- und ge-fallen. Die Ideen sprudelten aus mir heraus und binnen weniger Wochen waren 90 Minuten neuer Musik fertig, welche ich auf 75 Minuten und ohne jegliche Einschränkungen bei der Qualität oder Sound zusammenstrich. „Reminiscence“ enthält romantische, epische, sentimentale, kitschige, verrückte, euphorische und traurige Stimmungen und spiegelt somit mein musikalisches Schaffen der letzten Jahre sehr gut wieder.

Die technische Arbeit an „Reminiscence“ war durch bloßen Pragmatismus geprägt. Vieles wurde live und mit vielen bewegten Modulationen direkt aufgenommen. Wenn ein Sound aus einem Plugin passte dann war das genauso gut wie ein selbst programmierter Klang aus dem Analogsynth. Zu viele Köche verderben den Brei. Nach diesem Motto beließ ich Klänge zunächst so, wie sie waren. Die Idee eines Songs sowie Arrangement und Abwechslung standen im Vordergrund. Die Songs sollten mehr Raum und auch Zeit erhalten. Beim finalen Mix tauschte ich dann viele Klänge aus und konzentrierte mich dabei bewusst auf wenige, aber richtig gute Synthesizer und Effekte. Auch kamen beim finalen Mix wieder neue Ideen dazu. Beinahe die Hälfte der Spuren löschte ich rigoros. Nur so konnten die Songs atmen ohne dabei an Komplexität zu verlieren. Beim Mastering ließ ich auch mal ein paar dB mehr Pegel zu als üblich. Auch das hat dem Sound nicht geschadet.

Fast alle Songs fließen ineinander und stehen nicht für sich allein. Ich habe mit vielen unterschiedlichen Track Reihenfolgen experimentiert und empfand den finalen Spannungsbogen als perfekte Mischung.

Das Artwork kann man unterschiedlich interpretieren: Meine Idee war es unterschiedlich gestimmte Menschen zu zeigen die nach links, also „zurück gehen“ und zwar dorthin, wo sie bereits schon einmal waren. Auf diesem Weg werden sie von meiner Musik, symbolisiert durch den Wellenform-Kreis darüber, begleitet. Nachdem das Artwork fertig und ein paar Tage vergangen waren, entdeckte ich eine zweite Intention: In dieser gehen die Menschen mit gesenktem Haupt ebenfalls wieder zurück, nur dieses Mal zu einer unerwünschten Normalität. Über Ihnen thront eine „Bedrohung“, der sie sich machtlos unterworfen fühlen. Es ist schon seltsam, wie das Unterbewusstsein manchmal ein Ergebnis beeinflussen kann. Wie auch immer, beide Interpretationen spiegeln die Zeit wieder in der die Musik entstand.

Musikalisch sehe ich es nicht als Stillstand. Im Gegenteil. Ich habe versucht wieder neue Elemente zuzulassen. Insgesamt ist „Reminiscence“ eine Spur klassischer geworden. Und auch dynamischer, was mir produktionstechnisch bisher immer etwas schwergefallen ist.

Während ich diese Zeilen schreibe höre ich das finale Album zum wiederholten Male. Es ist ganz genau so geworden, wie ich bin und sein will. Und das ist verdammt gut so. Viel Spaß mit meinem Album „Reminiscence“.

Nachtrag vom 28.September 2022: Das Album sowie die Texte usw. waren bereits im April 2021 fertig und sollte dann im Herbst 2021 erscheinen. Daraus wurde leider nichts, da wir im Sommer 2021 von der Flutkatastrophe schwer betroffen waren. Ich habe das Album daher in den letzten Wochen mehrmals intensiv gehört und habe letztendlich beschlossen es so zu belassen wie es war.

EN :In October 2020 I finished the work on my last album "Beyond the Neonlights". After that, I didn't turn on any of my synthesizers for 5 months. Yes, I needed time off from music production for the first time in my life. The Corona blues and the cancelled concerts and jobs did the rest. During this time I thought a lot about life. I also listened intensively to my own music of the last decades. This experience was new and valuable. But making my own music was, as I said, taboo. In between, I was plagued by real worries that I had irretrievably lost something in myself. That happens to many. Fortunately it came differently. At the beginning of April, I turned on my synths for the first time in almost half a year with the aim of working on new musical ideas. One idea followed the next. After a few days I came up with the idea of using a kind of essence of my musical work so far as a concept for the next album. It is very important to me that my new album "Reminiscence" is not a remix album. Every song is new and from scratch. I have used my own sounds and ideas from my own musical past with care. Fans and loyal listeners of my music will surely notice and like this. The ideas bubbled out of me and within a few weeks 90 minutes of new music were ready, which I cut down to 75 minutes and without any restrictions in quality or sound. "Reminiscence" contains romantic, epic, sentimental, kitschy, crazy, euphoric and sad moods and thus reflects my musical work of the last years very well.

The technical work on "Reminiscence" was characterized by sheer pragmatism. Much was recorded live and with a lot of moving modulations directly. If a sound from a plugin fit then that was just as good as a self-programmed sound from the analog synth. Too many cooks spoil the broth. According to this motto, I initially left sounds as they were. The idea of a song as well as arrangement and variety were in the foreground. The songs should get more space and also time. In the final mix, I then exchanged many sounds and deliberately concentrated on a few, but really good synthesizers and effects. New ideas were also added to the final mix. I deleted almost half of the tracks rigorously. Only in this way could the songs breathe without losing complexity. During mastering I also allowed a few dB more level than usual. This did not harm the sound either.

Almost all songs flow into each other and do not stand alone. I experimented with many different track orders and found the final tension to be a perfect mix.

The artwork can be interpreted in different ways: My idea was to show differently tuned people going left, that is "going back" to where they have been before. On this way they are accompanied by my music, symbolized by the waveform circle above. After the artwork was finished and a few days had passed, I discovered a second intention: in this one, the people with bowed heads also go back, only this time to an undesirable normality. Above them towers a "threat" to which they feel powerlessly subjected. It's strange how the subconscious can sometimes influence an outcome. However, both interpretations reflect the time in which the music was created.

Musically, I don't see it as a standstill. On the contrary. I tried to allow new elements again. All in all, "Reminiscence" has become a bit more classical. And also more dynamic, which has always been a bit difficult for me in terms of production.

While I'm writing these lines I'm listening to the final album again. It has become exactly the way I am and want to be. And that's damn good. Have fun with my album "Reminiscence".

Addendum from September 28th 2022: The album as well as the information text etc. were already finished in April 2021 and should be released in autumn 2021. Unfortunately, nothing came of it, because we were badly affected by the flood disaster in the summer of 2021. Therefore, I have listened to the album intensively several times in the last weeks and finally decided to leave it as it was.
