C o n t e n t Beschäftigt man sich mit der Tiefsee und den Ozeanen, stellt man vor allen Dingen eines fest: wir wissen eigentlich recht wenig über das Bescheid, was sich unter der Wasseroberfläche abspielt. Sicher, wir haben eine Vorstellung davon, wie globale Mechanismen funktionieren. Wir kennen einen (geringen) Teil der Arten und so langsam beginnen wir zu verstehen, dass die Tiefsee-Biotope, so fremd sie uns auch erscheinen mögen, für unsere eigene Existenz wichtig sind. Dennoch, diese zum größten Teil lichtlose und fremde Welt ist weitestgehend unerforscht. In der Tat wissen wir mehr über die Sterne, die uns umgeben, als über die Welt, aus der wir alle zu kommen scheinen. Gleichwohl hindert das uns Menschen nicht, vorhandene Ressourcen gnadenlos auszubeuten. Dies betrifft nicht nur die Überfischung der Meere oder der nicht enden wollende Durst nach Öl. Wir beginnen auch, die Meeresböden unserer Ozeane gnadenlos auszubeuten. Selbst die schlimmsten Umweltkatastrophen hindern uns nicht, neue und profitable Quellen zu identifizieren – selbstverständlich jegliche Nachhaltigkeit ignorierend. Ein Meeresboden, dem z.B. Manganknollen „abgekämmt“ worden sind, ist nachher nur noch Schrott wert. Erst ein zweiter Blick zeigt uns, das auch dort, in vielen tausend Metern Wassertiefe, Leben existiert. Zumindest vor diesen Ernteaktionen. Dort, wo die Kontinentalplatten durch Magmaströme auseinandergeschoben werden, also an den mittelozeanischen Rücken, gibt es so genannte „Schwarze Raucher“. Hydrothermale Quellen, die eine über 400 Grad heiße Ursuppe ausspucken. Erst seit einigen Jahren weiß man, dass sogar hier Leben existiert. Ganze Biotope aus Würmern, Schnecken und Archaeen. „Beyond The Deep“ ist eine musikalische Fiktion. Ein Plädoyer für den Erhalt einer einmaligen und zerbrechlichen Welt. Mal bedrohlich. Mal gewaltig. Mal verträumt. Und auch mal relaxt. Wer weiß schon, welche Parties an den „schwarzen Rauchern“ oder in „Lost City“ gefeiert werden? Um das rauszufinden, sollte man nicht zerstören und ausbeuten. Man sollte hinschauen und forschen. Die Meere und ihre Bewohner und auch unsere Kinder würden es uns danken…

On closer examination of the deep sea and the oceans, one is especially clear: we actually know very little about what is going on under the surface. Sure, we know how global mechanisms are working (do we really?). We know a (small) part of the species and slowly we begin to understand that the deep-sea habitats, how alien they may seem to us, are important for our own lifes. However, this unlit and unfamiliar world is widely unexplored. In fact we know more about the stars that surround us, than about the world from which we all seem to originate. Sure, this does not prevent human beings from exploiting existing resources merciless. This does not only concern the overfishing of the oceans or the never-ending thirst for oil. We begin to exploit the seabed of our oceans without mercy. Even the worst environmental disasters do not hinder us to identify new and profitable sources - obviously ignoring any sustainability. A sea floor, for example the manganese nodules have been "combed" remains only scrap value afterwards. Only a second glance shows that there also, in many thousands of meters of the water, life is existing. At least before this “harvest” actions. Where the continental plates are pushed apart by magma flows, therefore, to the ocean ridges, there are so-called "black smokers". Hydrothermal vents, that spit a 400 degrees hot primordial soup. Since a few years, we know, that life is even here! Whole habitats of worms, snails and archaea. "Beyond The Deep" is a musical fiction. A plea for the conservation of this unique and fragile world. Sometimes threatening. Sometimes phenomenal. And sometimes relaxing. Who knows what kind of parties will be held at the "black smokers" or in "lost city"? To find out, we should not destroy and exploit. We should do research and take a closer look to understand. The seas and their inhabitants will be greatful...
